Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott have been called upon by ENA to establish a joint industry-government taskforce that will create a blueprint for using natural gas in lieu of conventional transport fuels.

A spokesperson for ENA says “the enhancement of Australia’s energy security is a key issue driving the taskforce” as ENA believes that natural gas could offer substantial benefits – especially for the transport sector. Natural gas-powered vehicles offer a viable solution to securing Australia’s transport energy security as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

ENA envisages that the proposed blueprint would lay the foundations for the future development of the industry and outline co-operative actions that could be pursued by government and industry.

“The taskforce would also address the current structural failure within the sector by providing a mechanism for co-ordination of vehicle supply, fuel supply and legislative actions.”
