The computer modelling project compares how different types of production platforms withstand the effects of giant waves in the open ocean.
CSIRO scientist Dr Murray Rudman has said that rogue waves are rare, extreme events, which pose a significant risk to offshore structures.
The computer modelling technology allows CSIRO researchers to create realistic rogue waves to pound virtual gas and oil production platforms, which are floating on the ocean but tethered to the ocean floor by cables. This means that various cable mooring systems and materials can be compared without the expense, inaccuracy and time associated with traditional water tank experiments.
