Chevron Managing Director Roy Krzywosinski welcomed the approval stating “This has been a rigorous and thorough assessment that has culminated with some of the most stringent conditions imposed on a major project anywhere in the world.”
The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) CEO Belinda Robinson described the decision as “Recognition that the upstream oil and gas industry could meet the highest environmental standards in bringing important natural gas supplies to market.”
Alongside the Gorgon joint venture’s $190 million commitment to environmental offsets, Mr Krzywosinski touted the benefits that the project would bring for the community.
“The Gorgon project is Australia’s single largest resource project and is set to deliver significant economic benefits and create thousands of jobs,” he said.
Article continues below…The participants in the Gorgon project now await final environmental approval from the Federal Government before making a final investment decision.
Meanwhile joint venture partner ExxonMobil has signed a deal with Indian Energy giant Petronet LNG to supply 1.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG from the Gorgon project for over twenty years.
Vice president of ExxonMobil Australia LNG Luke Musgrave said “This historic agreement is the first long term sale of LNG from Australia to India.”
