The proposed North East Gas Interconnect (NEGI) Pipeline will require an environmental impact statement (EIS) that could take years to complete.

The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (EPA) decided that the pipeline section relevant to the NT requires assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act at the level of an EIS.

The Queensland Coordinator-General has also declared the NT Link Project relevant to Queensland to be a coordinated project for which an EIS is required under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act.

The NT Government is currently seeking commercial proposals for the pipeline connecting the northern and eastern Australian gas markets, which has been granted major project status.
