NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the new 12.5 megawatt gas turbine is part of a $14 million upgrade to boost Katherine’s power capacity by up to 50 per cent. Mr Henderson said “Under our program, every single power station across the Territory is being upgraded.
“We have invested in a massive $1.8 billion program of works to bring our network up to scratch. Our investment in power and water will ensure the capacity and reliability of the network meets the growing demand required to secure the Territory’s power supplies into the future.
“As a Government we are committed to investing into Katherine as one of the Territory’s key growth towns. This major $1.8 billion infrastructure program has in total supported more than 1,000 jobs, many of them from remote and regional areas.”
The $1.8 billion investment includes:
- $120 million to install two Rolls Royce gas turbines at Channel Island;
- $125 million for environmental improvements in the Darwin region, including closure of the Larrakeyah outfall; and,
- $17 million for a natural gas power station at Wadeye.
