The power station is comprised of three gas-fired turbines generating an initial capacity of 210 MW of electricity, as well as an additional 180 MW capacity to provide back-up electricity when required, as well as peaking capacity to the National Electricity Market.
“The Tamar Valley Power station uses efficient gas turbine technology, and its output equates to about 14 per cent of Tasmania’s total generation capacity,” Mr Bartlett said.
Mr Bartlett said the new power station will play a critical role in Tasmania’s future as a clean power producer, providing for the state’s energy security and diversity of supply.
In 2008, Babcock & Brown Power signed an agreement to sell the Tamar Valley Power Station to Tasmanian Government-owned Aurora Energy.
Article continues below…The Tamar Valley Power Station will utilise gas sourced from the 734 km Tasmanian Gas Pipeline, which transports Gippsland Basin gas from the Longford compressor station in Victoria to Tasmania.
